Chi Kung (Qigong)
Qigong is an ancient Chinese health care system that integrates physical postures, breathing techniques and focused intention. The word Qigong (Chi Kung) is made up of two Chinese words. Qi is pronounced chee and is usually translated to mean the life force or vital-energy that flows through all things in the universe. The second word, Gong, pronounced gung, means accomplishment, or skill that is cultivated through steady practice. Together, Qigong (Chi Kung) means cultivating energy. it is a system practiced for health maintenance, healing and increasing vitality.Qigong is an integration of physical postures, breathing techniques, and focused intentions.
Chi Kung excercises help to relax the body with the coordination of breath and gentle range of motion movements to the joints. These range of motion exercises can be performed passively, active assist, or actively. The movements can include: flexion, extension, abduction, adduction, supination, pronation, inversion, eversion, radial and ulnar deviation, internal and external rotation, as well as opposition. These movements coordinated with the breath help to gently stretch the muscles and relax the joints.
Chi Kung are sets of exercises that are documented and performed in China as part of their medical practice. They are not or should not be exercises that are made up and called chi kung. Most chi kung exercises in China have been researched and proven, but, like anything else there are always those that try to stand on their own merit.
